About Castillo de Pinar Olive Oil

Olive Oil Bottle of Violet Glass by Castillo de PinarUnique Violet Glass Bottle

Preserving the Purity - Naturally

Castillo de Piñar Olive Oil is bottled in a unique and exclusive violet glass bottle which preserves the organoleptic qualities of our Organic, EVOO, and Virgin Olive Oils.

Castillo de Piñar farmers are dedicated to caring for our olive trees in order to maintain the natural purity, outstanding taste and health benefits coming from the most highly favored olive varieties in the world.

In the spirit of our farmers' quest for perfection, we searched the world to find the perfect bottling system needed to preserve the quality of our olive oil products. Many olive oil producers fill dark colored bottles in an effort to reduce harmful light penetration.  However, dark bottles simply cannot prevent the most harmful ultra-violet light from impacting their oils.  Our exclusive violet glass bottles prevent the entry of ultra-violet light, naturally protecting the oil's properties.

Violet Glass Bottle Wavelength Spectrum by Castillo de PinarLess Light for Longer Shelf Life

This unique violet glass bottle is similar in composition to that of a violet amethyst. Our bottle preserves the olive oil's organoleptic properties, providing natural protection for a longer shelf life. Other conventional packaging materials do not offer sufficient protection.  Most plastics are porous, exposing their contents to oxidation and in some cases even influence taste.  Also amber, green or clear glass bottles do not shield light-sensitive contents sufficiently.

Storage Test with Tomatoes

Tomato Storage Test of Castillo de Pinar Olive Oil Bottle

A microbiological experiment was conducted with cherry tomatoes. During this test, two cherry tomatoes were stored for 7 months - one in a white glass container and one in a violet glass container.  They were kept at room temperature near a window where sunlight could reach both bottles equally. After 7 months, the cherry tomato stored in ultra violet glass showed no loss of color and no signs of drying out, while the microbiological changes of the tomato stored in white glass can be clearly seen.

Storage Test with Chives

White, green and brown glass bottles are permeable in the visible light spectrum and don’t offer enough protection against the decomposition caused by light. As an experiment, several herbs and spices were stored for 3 months in several types of glass (white, brown, violet), and were either exposed to the sun for several hours a day or kept inside.

After 2 months, the visible quality change was recorded with photographs, and the difference in smell determined in a blind test with volunteers. The illustration shows clearly that the chive samples that were exposed to the sun have bleached in brown and white glass. As photographed in this illustration, the sample stored in violet glass shows no color change. The smell of the chives stored in violet glass was also clearly stronger and fresher.
